Split Up with Split Ends

Spoiler Alert: “They will never be corrected… they need to be cut off!” - Carly Zanoni

Do you ever look closely at the ends of your hair and stare at those itty bitty white specs? You’re looking at your split ends!

Carly Zanoni [@the.blonde.chronicles] is an established hair stylist and educator located in San Diego, CA. She is well accomplished in her career as she is part of the BTC [Behind the Chair] Team and operates an educational platform known as “The Blonde Chronicles University” [@the.bcu] in efforts to help stylists stand out and grow. Her page is extremely informative and provides usable content and tips for the beauty industry!

One of her Instagram posts gives us insight to her take on split ends: “Say it with me friends: ‘Split ends don’t go away unless you cut them off.’”

On the left, you can see the timeline of how split ends start and what happens when they are left untreated.  Split ends travel up the hairr shaft causing further damage and breakage.

Your relationship with your hair is exceedingly important, and the notion of cutting it may bring up mixed emotions. But, like any healthy relationship, compromises need to be made.

"Split ends happen over time...it's unavoidable"

-- Carly Zanoni [@the.blonde.chronicles]

Split ends occur naturally every 12-16 weeks. If you read my blog post “4 Ways Hair is Damaged + How to Counteract Them”, you’re familiar with how to properly protect and nourish your hair. Split ends are a different animal, as they happen when the hair becomes frayed. “Unfortunately, there is no way to ‘heal’ split ends," Carly explains.

Recommendations

Carly recommends that healthy hair can typically go 12 weeks between haircuts. Damaged hair may require a little more attention at the 8-10 week mark. It’s as important to keep up with your trims and haircuts as your color/highlights. Whenever you receive a color service, definitely add on a trim of about 1/4in to ensure you maintain your length and hair health. Consider haircut maintenance appointments between color appointments, as well!

Bottom Line: The only way to split up with split ends is to cut 👏 them 👏 off! 👏
