It’s important to briefly understand the natural levels of hair and levels of raw lift in hair [see image for reference]. Level 1 is black and level 10 is the lightest blonde. Stylists know the lighter a client’s natural level is, the less “lifting” is required to achieve a bright blonde, and the opposite goes for darker colors. Darker natural levels require more levels of lift. Based on the chart below, you can tell the lighter (higher) the level, the more yellow pigments; the darker (lower) the level, the more red/orange tones are present.
