Let's Talk: Dandruff + Dry Scalp

How to know which is which?

If you struggle with the aggravation of dandruff or a dry scalp, know you are NOT alone. Dandruff and dry scalp have similar symptoms like dryness, itchiness, irritation, and flakes which makes it difficult to tell them apart. However, each has distinct traits that tip-off which is which. Read below to find out what dandruff and dry scalp is, how to differentiate them, and what to do to ease your frustrations surrounding them.

Dandruff:

Dandruff is mainly caused by seborrheic dermatitis, a condition making the skin turn oily, red, and scaly. Multiple factors attribute to dandruff: overactive sebaceous (oil) glands, stress, and fungal growth (malassezia). Some of these conditions work in conjunction as too much oil can create an environment for malassezia to thrive. In return, skin cells shed more rapidly resulting in oily white/yellow flakes.

Dry Scalp:

Dry scalp occurs when there is too little moisture in the skin. It can be effected by the body's ability to produce or retain moisture, climate (especially winter months), or excessive washing (stripping hair of its natural oils). A good indication of dry scalp is other parts of the body also have dry skin. Irritated skin cells will shed with the flakes being smaller and whiter.

Key Differences

Conditions Dandruff Dry Scalp

smaller, white dry flakes X

Treatment

Dandruff

  1. Consider a medicated shampoo. Dandruff is a medical condition and typically will not go away unless treated properly. You may need to try a few brands before finding the one that relieves your dandruff.
  2. Add tea tree oils into your scalp care routine. Tea tree has strong anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties which makes it a great option for dandruff treatment.

Dry Scalp

  1. Use a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner.
  2. Wash less often. Washing strips our hair and scalp of its natural oils necessary for hydration.
